Acupuncture and Fertility: A Surprising Match

Since the olden times, the practice of acupuncture has always been associated with pain relief. Its lesser known positive attribute, however, is reviving the body’s natural healing mechanisms, including our ability to conceive.

Improving Reproduction

As an alternative medicine, acupuncture is both a traditional and an unconventional form of treatment. Acupuncture goes back to ancient Chinese methods of healing and involves inserting the body with thin needles. The treatment is known to act “effectively and efficiently, without many of the unwanted side effects.”

Many would-be mothers are considering acupuncture as their go-to drug to boost both estrogen, progesterone as well making sure the epithelium lining is well established to provide a proper attachment of the egg. Scientists have discovered that acupuncture increases a woman’s chances of pregnancy by 43.3 percent, which is a lot compared to the 20 percent when using only hormonal medications. More and more couples are seeking acupuncture treatments to increase their success rates with baby-making.

“One important mechanism responsible for the fertility treatment success with acupuncture is hormonal regulation,” said Dr. Zhiguang Hu, research lead at the Mawangdui Hospital of Hunan Province in China. “The study confirms that acupuncture normalizes prolactin levels more rapidly than receiving fertility medications.”

It’s not that Easy

Contrary to popular belief, stabbing yourself with needles won’t yield the same results. Professional acupuncture practitioners complete several training courses that can go for over 6 years before qualifying for a license. While basic certification for certain Medical Doctors needs less than 300 hours of common acupuncture knowledge, a license will demand over 2500 hours. A practitioner’s integrity, willingness to learn, and trustworthiness also have a say in their qualification.

As part of the practice, doctors complete a medical examination before performing the acupuncture treatment, so it’s best if they are just as knowledgeable in human biology as any medical practitioner.
