Mindfulness…
You may have been hearing about mindfulness in the news recently and wondered what it is and why it seems to have become so popular. Many people are realizing that stress and distraction are causing them to miss much of their lives, and mindfulness practice offers a solution.

Mindfulness is the skill of paying attention to the present moment—noticing what is happening in the body, thoughts, emotions and the environment, accepting what we find, and then responding with wise choice, rather than on auto-pilot out of fear and stress.  It’s not about sitting in lotus position emptying the mind, but rather it’s about learning how to be more mindful and aware in all aspects of our lives. With mindfulness, we retrain the brain to be able to focus when we’re distracted and frazzled, calm ourselves when we are upset and stressed, and pay attention to the positives in our lives.

The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program (MBSR) was created by Jon Kabat Zinn, PhD, an MIT-trained microbiologist, while he was working at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in 1979. The program was developed in a medical setting in order to help alleviate the suffering of patients with chronic and debilitating medical conditions such as chronic pain and cancer. Since then a large body of research has been conducted, demonstrating the effectiveness of the program, and tens of thousands of people have benefited from the program worldwide in both clinical and nonclinical settings.
Hundreds of studies have shown a wide variety of benefits, including:

Reducing symptoms of:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep disorders
  • High blood pressure
  • Chronic pain
  • Improving immune function
  • Focus and attention
  • Overall happiness and wellbeing.
